Carnivorous Plants

Mike came into see us and brought his amazing carnivorous plants. We watched as they trapped doosy flies. The plants were very quick to close over the fly once the triggers were set off. One of the plants had sticky tentacles and that is how it caught its prey. The other was a native of Florida in America and it was very long and shaped like a pitcher. The flies go in and can't get out.
Wow Mike you know so much, thanks for coming in and sharing.

Co2

A certain young lady was at the dinner table after this session and accidentally released a burp. Before she could be reprimanded and told to use her manners, she told the table that it was simply Co2 rising and trying to escape.
Spiders, co2 added to water and a bit of flavour and then ice cream fantastic!
 Hokey, Pokey Yum Yum!

Love these faces, they tried citric acid, it was so funny to hear their comments about how sour it was.

Who Dunnit?????

Science Alive Forensics visited Elmwood School, Room 8 had to solve a mystery. Four friends had also been to the 3 bears house just before Goldilocks. Room 8 needed to find out who had really eaten the porridge and guess what, much to our surprise it was another friend called Ben. We had to look at a spill on the floor, a footprint, a note and also a small handprint. It was an amazing experience and the children loved every minute.

We made our own song.

Spring is here and the creative children in Room 8 created this little ditty about the Daffodil. Seriously talented.

Thaumatropes

We created our own thaumatropes, they are an optical illusion designed in the 19th century. There was a round circle on one side a snowman and on the other a  snow globe. When you spin the circle the snowman appears in the snow globe. I can't believe my eyes!

Dosa

We read a book about living in India, and we are so fortunate to have an Indian family in our room. Sneha's mum - Sandhya came in and cooked Dosa. She made them into a cone shape, we could have it with sugar or a spicy relish. It was delicious.
Josh "oh yeah"
Ben "spicey"
Alexandra "it is really hot on my mouth"
Luca " Sandhya, that was gooood"
Cam " I love the green"
Sneha "My mum is the greatest Indian dosa maker in the world!"
Tara "I think so too!"

Blooming Flowers

We made small paper flowers and folded the petals over. We popped them into the water and slowly the petals unfurled and opened. We wondered... what would happen if we made a bigger flower, or used different paper.
If you look at a piece of paper under a microscope you will see it has lots of tiny little holes. The water goes into the holes and makes it expand, (get bigger). This makes the petals on the paper flower open.

Solid, Liquid or Gas

What is going on here???
We had a cup of water and a drop of dishwashing detergent. Add a piece of C02 and watch the fun happen.
Later we put a piece of C02 inside a balloon and did it up, and due to the process of sublimation, it blew up!!! Did yours POP?
